Websites for TRAVELING/TEACHING OVERSEAS
TOP THREE MYTHS ABOUT TEACHING ESL
- TEFL Certified: many sites will say you need a TEFL to teach overseas, MOST jobs especially in Asia will accept teachers with no experience or certification and only require that you are a Native speaker, Have a degree, and NO criminal background. while having a TEFL may increase your chances it is absolutely NOT necessary to spend the money getting a certificate and experience is just as good as having a TEFL.
- It's necessary to speak the countries language:Absolutely NOT! I taught ESL in Taiwan for three years and only knew how to say hello (Ni-Hao) prior to landing. As an English Teacher your classes will all be strictly English only. In many countries, especially Asian countries people do understand simple phrases in English which will make it easy to order coffee, find a restroom and get around. Also remember many signs are universal world wide and miming is the best go to form of communication ( I became an expert at it ).
- Discrimination: While I did encounter some discrimination, on a whole my host country Taiwan, is very welcoming to ESL Teachers and visitors of all ethnic backgrounds. Mostly it is the parents who have the concern and it is up to the school to educate the parents. Taiwan is a small homogeneous island whose only references to other cultures come from what is seen on t.v.. I did a lot of cultural educating and came across what I learned to be simple ignorance rather than malicious discrimination. It is important to remember that which ever country you choose to make your Host home and the culture you are immersing yourself in is not going to be the same as where you are from, the people may have certain stereotypes about you as you may have about them. Teaching overseas is not just an opportunity to make money and travel it is also an opportunity for cultural exchange and world wide education between cultures.
